Both of the below comments below miss the point about using transit as an a fall back option in winter or stormy weather, for those who don't like riding bicycles in bad weather.
This is why bicyclists in Madison should join with the bus advocates in fighting the mayor's plans to increase bus fares to $2 per ride. A 33% hike per ride will not only cost those of us who use the bus more, it will likely lead to more motor vehicle congested street travel since there will be some bus users who might switch to driving rather than pay $4 a day to ride the bus ($4 round trip). It could also hurt future service if many stop taking the bus. (This is the downward spiral Mike Barrett warned the last time the city proposed raising bus fares too much.) The proposed bus fare increase will get a hearing before the Common Council on Nov. 11, and before the Transit & Parking Commission Nov. 24th. Bicyclists and bus riders should be there in full force. If people believe that you cannot bicycle in winter, then they believe they need those wider roads, they can't ditch their cars, etc, etc. <So is the lack of appeal of winter cycling a major hang-up for cycling infrastructure or anti-sprawl issues? I find that really ironic since Madison is such an easy community to bike in in the winter. Not only are the streets fairly well maintained but the bike paths are maintained... period. I've never lived anyplace where the authorities clear the bike paths. Here winter cycling is only a minor inconvenience at times, as opposed to a major challenge elsewhere.
