< ... Which brings up this study I found today:

< Do Motor Vehicle Users in the US Pay Their Way?
http://pubs.its.ucdavis.edu/download_pdf.php?id=1139

< The study indicates that US motor-vehicle users fall short of paying
their own way for roads by a margin of 20-70 cents per gallon of
gasoline
<

The study also mentions that in this accounting they include only government
expenditures and not any ‘‘external’’ costs of motor-vehicle use. That is HUGE
omission and includes things like degraded air, health implications, impacts of
sprawl, etc..

Driving costs 52.3¢ per mile, or $5500-$7000 per year according to the AAA.
