Larry,

I would like to thank you and your staff for designing the CTH S&M
intersection around the needs of Peds/Bikes first rather than fitting
them in as an aferthought. As much as I'd like to see the CTH S&M
capacity expansion work delayed for a year or so for budget reasons, I
do appreciate the improved attention to the needs of peds/bikes.

Two questions regarding the budget:

1) Do the "$135,083 ped/traffic calming budgets" in the pipeline reflect
items that were part of the 2008 budget, or are those items part of the
2009 budget or some other budget?

2) Can you provide some numbers regarding the trends over the last few
budgets in the percentage of transportation dollars (Fed+State+Local)
spent in ways that provide various MV-alternative infractruture in (or
adjacent to) Madison versus spending on infrastructure primariliy
dedicated to facilitating travel by motor vehicle in (or adjacent to)
Madison? I realize this may be hard to break out according to my
question, so perhaps you can answer the nearest question that gets at
the same point: Are we trending toward facilitating more human-scaled
transportation in Madison, or more Motor-vehicle-scaled transportation?

Thanks,

- Matt

Alder Webber, I told you that we have $135,083 for the ped/traffic
calming budgets in the pipeline and another $100,000 in the 2009 Budget.
In addition, those types of that are determined to be part of the 2009
Reconstruction Streets will be financed from those projects. That has
always been the goal of traffic calming....inclusion of traffic calming
design standards in our new streets and reconstruction projects.

We are pleased that we have finally gotten through the backlog of
traffic calming projects.

I am confident that staff can make the necessary decisions to recommend
future priority projects that have neighborhood support.
