Just wanted to give the biking community a big pat on the back, because as the article notes, "many citizens helped in identifying the "bike rage" suspect." This list, and probably other electronic messages, as well as the observational skills of people in the neighborhood, helped the police make the arrest.
Colin's description of the bikes helped, no doubt! Really, if the description had been "a tall guy with a blue road bike and a short woman also on a road bike, but I couldn't see the color," would any of us have been able to say, "Oh yeah, I've seen those bikes and the people that ride them?" That's why, despite the differences we may have, we can say there is a biking COMMUNITY. Robbie P.S. Haven't all of had encounters, or heard of others, where you think, "This guy really doesn't know who he's talking to?" I'm sure Mr Dunlavy never considered that the guy he attacked might be able to identify him by the high-end bikes he and his girlfriend were riding. My favorite story along these lines was when I was talking to a management employee for an apartment building in my aldermanic district about the bike racks he had installed, and how they didn't meet city code, didn't meet the plans submitted to the city, etc. A zoning inspector was with me, and when the employee started arguing about the ordinance and how I must be wrong about what it said, we just looked at each other. Then the management guy says, "What are you, some sort of bike parking expert?" The Zoning Inspector and I look at each other, and as I paused, the inspector says, "Um, yeah, she is actually, and I'm backing her up. Get the right racks and have them installed the way we told you." We still laugh about that one.
