FYI, in going through my emails, there was a request from the Mayor's office for projects that would fit the economic stimulus package. Since I had already prepared a list of bike/ped projects at the end of October - at the request of several nation groups - I sent that on to the Mayor's office.
It appears to me that the list(s) are still being compiled, revised, and considered. The first notice of the need for projects, from national bike/ped groups, said the projects needed to be able to be completed "in 2009." Many of us argued that this was an unreasonable timetable, given the need for preliminary engineering on most projects, and the fact that PE is usually not done until the funding has been secured, therefore creating a circular problem. Also, given that construction season is limited in northern climes, most 2009 projects have already been selected, and are going out to bid soon. Now the timetable seems to be looser, and there is less requirement that the projects actually be completed in 2009. We'll see what happens, but my concern is that the projects that get funding - whether buildings, road, bike paths, bridges, or maintenance - will actualy not stimulte the economy, because they will be projects that are already scheduled to be built!
