My wife asked me if I wanted to use the car today. My response: "You
know full well I can go out in 15 below and not notice how cold it is!
Ask me again when it gets under 25 below".

My gear today:

o Full face balaclava ( outdoor research, fixed nose/chin cover - I have
another one a that I can use with the chin/nose cover pulled down, but
when it gets this cold, the fixed cover works much better).

o Cheap set of clear ski goggles I got at menards. Zero fog problems!
when I have the goggles and balaclava on, I have zero exposed skin

o Pants: lycra/spandex bike pants under regular jeans.

o gloves: cheap worker's gloves I bought at menards. By far the warmest
gloves I have ever owned, even compared to the pricey/exotic gloves I
tried from bike shops. I have 2 sets of cotton inner-gloves I wear when
it starts getting well below zero, but not today.

o jacket: north face gortex outer shell with an REI goose down liner
zipped in.

o shoes: regular old cross-trainers and tube socks. If I was going
longer distances, I'd opt to use my winter boots with regular tube socks
and a pair of wool hiking socks.

o tires: my newest acquisition - a pair of Nokians on my winter mountain
bike. These work great! My only concern is that I developed some
amazing slide-correcting reflexes in my legs during last year's epic
winter and I can tell the amazing grip and forgiving slide
characteristics of the new tires are going to destroy those reflexes.
