I am from Ireland originally but have lived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for more than 7 years. I cycle as my main means of transport. Also I am a founding member of UWABA (www.geocities.com/UwabaDar/index-en.htm) which is an active cycle campaign organisation. A number of UWABA members came up with an idea of starting a cycle courier service in Dar es Salaam. Currently the only courier services here are motorbikes. I think cyclists could compete in this market, plus it would generate employment and help some of our members make a better living. It would be better to set it up as a seperate cooperative, as UWABA is an NGO and not supposed to engage in business activities, but the setting up of the cooperative could be done by UWABA members and supported by UWABA. However, I have a full time job (in computers) and don't have much time to set this up. Also I have no experience in this business. I found your website http://www.messengers.org/ifbma/ which is very interesting. I was wondering if there is anyone you know of who has some experience in the cycle courier business who may be willing to volunteer for some time to come to Tanzania to help set up a cycle courrier cooperative here. Our members would look after the volunteer, and while we don't have funds for this, we could somehow try to get funding somewhere for travel and other expenses for the volunteer. Let me know what you think.
