Peter is correct.  There was an "experiment" with separate bike and bus
lanes on the square about 3 years ago.  It was a disaster and even more
confusing to everyone trying to use the square than what we have now.  It
may be that the shared lane needs to be re-painted?  Have the bike/bus lane
signs been removed?
