Please see forwarded message from one of our friends in Fitchburg. His
opponent seems to think riding a bike on Fish Hatchery Rd is a joke.

Subject: Request for election help from area bicyclists
To:

As some of you know, I am running for re-election to the Fitchburg Common
Council on Tuesday.

Over the last three days, my opponent has been dropping literature in
selected areas of my district 4 (including all of Fitchburg's rural areas:
http://www.city.fitchburg.wi.us/city_clerk/documents/CityPollingLocations.pdf).
 He says, in part:

I will not get on my 'High Horse' or should I say 'High
Bicycle' and threaten to ride down the middle
of Fish Hatchery road during rush hour like
the incumbent did on the council floor..." [sic].

This obscure, context-free reference is to a retort I made to the current
mayor when he said that no one should bicycle on Fish Hatchery Road, that
it's not safe.

I commute from central Fitchburg to my job at the University via Fish
Hatchery Road four days a week, ten months a year, almost exclusively at
rush hour. I stand for the rights of cyclists to use the public roads
whenever they like, for recreation, transportation, and competition. Roads
are shared space for which all taxpayers pay.

I have worked hard to advocate for the interests of cyclists, amending the
City budget to update our bike and ped plan and to complete the Fitchburg
portion of the Badger State Trail, supporting the Quarry Ridge free mountain
bike trail, completing the Cap City Trail overpass over Fish Hatchery Road,
advocating for the Perry St bike-ped bridge over the Beltline, hassling
jurisdictions for better maintenance of bike lanes, pushing for
bike-friendly street and road designs, etc. I've worked with our Police
Department to get support for cyclist rights.

I would appreciate your support. If you live in Fitchburg district 4,
please vote for me. If you know someone else who does, ask them to do the
same. There are other ways to support me listed on my Web site, but with so
little time left, voting and volunteering on election day are about the only
ones that will help now.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Regards,
