*Disclaimer: Shamelessly off-subject post follows.

The water the Starkweather Creek (known as the Wyseora Creek in the pre
white-settlement days) fluctuates greatly by season. During high water I
have paddled from the Dixon St greenway at Milwaukee St up past Aberg Avenue
and through the golf course and eventually had to stop at the airport where
the culvert was too small to enter. There are many interesting little
channels up there which were undoubtedly created in order to drain that
area. Going downstream from the Greenway, there is a fork in the creek where
the smaller and more-easterly channel joins the larger channel. In high
water, it is possible to travel a good way up through the gravel pit and
eventually almost to highway 30.

During most of the year, you can head strait down the creek and wind up
going through Olbrich Gardens and paddling to the creeks effluence at Lake
Monona. However last spring during high water, the water was too high to get
under the bridge at the Isthmus path (bicycle connection). As Robbie said,
from Lake Monona you can ride the water all the way the Gulf of Mexico and
from there, well who knows. Around 10-years ago a couple from Madison put in
at Lake Monona in October and wound up in New Orleans by New Year's Eve and
the Florida Keys a few months later.

I've seen wildlife ranging from beavers, to turtles, to blue and green
herons in parts of the creek.

Happy paddling,
Steve
