Someone needs to invent a sensor that could collect additional demographic data, such as age, gender, helmet usage, length and purpose of trip, etc. (The only technology I know of that can do that is a human with a clipboard.)
Apropos of the SciAm article, it would be fascinating to see if and how the gender balance changes with the weather. Mark C.
