Some traffic islands, such as the ones on Reetz Rd (behind the Verona Rd Home Depot in Madison) are awful! Located on streets that are too narrow, *and* have no sidewalks -- so joggers, pedestrians, cyclists, and dog-walkers who have to take the road get squeezed terribly! This was the result of a traffic engineer having no idea what s/he was doing in deciding to put one there.

Traffic islands, on the other hand, are great. We have several on the near West side that provide kids walking to school with a safe place to regroup after crossing one lane, on Farley, for example, while waiting for an opening in traffic to cross the other lane.
