I can't tell the bike light industry what to do, but it seems to me that it would be in their interest to get together and establish some standards for describing the intensity and beam pattern of their products. We've found that while measuring our lights using Lumens, Lux or Candle power we can have a good comparison from one Planet Bike light to another however there are no industry standards for testing light intensity. This makes comparing one brand of lights to another mis-leading and inaccurate. These tests also do not take into consideration the beam pattern of the light you’ll find where the light is in front of you is just as important as the overall intensity rating. After all, what good is twice the light if half the light is illuminating the tree-tops? In case anyone out there is listening (Planet Bike, maybe?) what I'd love to see on product labels and in reviews of bike lights is how many lumens they produce on full charge. Knowing the wattage doesn't help much because reflectors or the lack thereof inside the light housing can increase/decrease the brightness. And I've never been in a bike shop that let me turn off all the store lights just so I could see how bright a given light is in the dark conditions in which I would actually use it. Lightbulb manufacturers list lumens, why not bike light manufacturers? Just a thought.
