Quoting one of the residents of the area of the incident:

"Someone's going to get killed, and to be frank with you, the residents aren't going to feel too bad about it."

The crucial point always missing from such discussions is that this common attitude implies that motorists are justified in deliberately putting cyclists at risk if they disapprove of their behavior. (And often it's the behavior of some OTHER cyclist.) I'm not condoning illegal, dangerous, or inconsiderate cycling, but I'm pretty sure none of them are capital offenses.
