The Center for Neighborhood Technology is a great bunch of folks. They have done work on the link between car dependence and foreclosures. When you combine the cost of a mortgage, plus your transportation costs, those houses farther out in the burbs seem less of a deal. Car dependent areas of the Chicago metro area have had a much higher foreclosure rate, and the same pattern has been found in other metro areas as well. This is probably not a blinding flash of the obvious to most on this list, but it's amazing how few people factor in commuting costs when they look at housing.
