So little that replacing just one car's short commute with an electric bike would save enough energy to run many, many other electric bikes. (One could calculate that more precisely, but it's not worth the trouble.) Or, each electric bike user could just replace one light bulb with a CFL. There may be valid objections to electric bikes, but electricity consumption isn't one of them. By the way, some of them do use regenerative braking, but really to extend range rather than to save electricity. (Recharging a completely dead battery would cost a couple cents.) Note that this is definitely NOT the case with electric cars which, if they appeared in significant numbers, would consume an enormous amount of electricity.
