I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at the 2010 Wisconsin Bike
Summittomorrow. Preregistration is now closed, but you can still register at
the event.There's plenty of space.
Getting
ready for the Summit has been made more complicated by the recent
volcanic
eruption in Iceland.
Our scheduled keynote speaker, Andreas Rohl, who leads the bicycle
program in Copenhagen, Denmark,
can’t fly out of his country. Volcano, shmolcano. We've still pulled
together a great line-up of speakers for Wednesday evening's
plenary session at 6 p.m.:
* John Burke is president of Trek Bicycle Corp.and a long-time
supporter of making cycling an option for every American. Burke
will talk about People for Bikes, a project of the Bikes
Belong Coalition that seeks to unite 1 million Americans to speak with one
powerful voice for bicycling—to make bicycling safer, more
convenient and appealing for everyone.
* Andy Clarke, president and executive director of the League of
American
Bicyclists, will tell us about the momentum that’s growing for bicycling
nationally. With U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood’s statement, “This is
the end of favoring motorized transportation at the expense of
non-motorized,” the United States is entering a new era of transportation
planning. Clarke will talk about how
we can seize this moment, taking a look at national initiatives that could have
an effect on cycling in years to come.
* Heather Fortune, advocacy
director for Saris Cycling Group,will present findings from a recent Wisconsin
delegation to Europe’s top bicycling cities. The trip, organized and led by
Saris President Chris Fortune, recently
brought more than 20 of our state's civic and business leaders to cities where
25%-35% of
residents choose to go by bike for commuting and errands.
These
speakers will provide practical ideas for making Wisconsin a better place to
bicycle.
