One of my pet peeves while biking is other bicyclists that pass on the
right - too close to the curb - or otherwise squeeze by on the street
where it is obvious that there isn't enough space. I am constantly
turning to look over by shoulder to make sure someone hasn't snuck up
on the right when I am getting ready for a right turn.

Also, people who change lanes or turn - to the left usually - without
looking behind them. When I do need to pass another bicyclist, I give
them a very wide berth and try to give a warning.

About 20 years ago, a left-turning bicyclist in front of me caused the
worst bike crash I have had to date. He was slowing down along the
right side of the road, and I assumed he was stopping. Nope. He's
pulling a U-turn right in front of me, just as I start to pass.

My bike handling wasn't as good as it is now, and I avoided a t-bone
collision by laying my bike in the road.

I can't tell you how many crashes I avoid every year by looking over
my shoulder before making a lateral move or turn. Unfortunately, I
seem to be the exception in downtown.
