The Hiawatha does not accept unboxed bikes (the "roll-on/roll-off service Robbie describes). Be warned that the agents at 1-800-USA-RAIL will tell you it does. The conductors of the actual train have a different opinion. The best way to figure this out for sure is to call the stations and ask a human who works there.

The Hiawatha does not have baggage service, and so boxed bikes will not be accepted. A boxed bike for which you have purchased a seat *may* be accepted, but you're taking your chances.

I don't know the answer, but perhaps you need to clarify what you mean
by "takes bikes."

Any Amtrak train allows bikes under two conditions:
1. The bike is boxed.
2. The station where you are leaving and arriving has luggage service.
(Some small stations only allow luggage that can be stored in the
passenger area, so that limits the size of the object you can bring on
the train.)

Obviously, # 2 isn't a problem in Chicago, Milwaukee, or the Twin
Cities. However, you may not want to box your bike.

Maybe what you are asking is, "Does the Hiawatha have roll-on/roll-off
service?" or will they take unboxed bikes?

Does anyone know if the Hiawatha (between Milwaukee and Chicago) takes bikes
now? I couldn't find any information on the Amtrak site, but the Twin Cities
Metro Transit site makes it appear that you can, at least going to/from the
Twin Cities.
