This project was a marking "retrofit" after the street was resurfaced. There
are two 10-foot
car lanes and a 12-foot bike/parking lane. Ideally 13 feet would have been
better. The car
lanes were narrowed from 11 feet in order to get bike accommodations.
Hopefully the
narrower lanes will slow down the cars. Studies show that a one-foot narrower
lane slows
down cars from 0 to 3 mph.

Yes 13 feet would have been better. That is what WisDOT considers desirable.
The
AASHTO minimum is 11 feet.

The marking could have been a little more precise so that there would have been
no
pavement marking within the 12 feet bike/parking lane. The 4-inch wide
pavement marking
should have been entirely in the motor vehicle lane.

It all happened with staff, BPW and council support in spite of bikies
"favorite" alderoid who
spoke at length against encouraging bikes on Midvale. It passed with only one
"no" from her.

I am very encouraged with the council's positive resolve on bike issues.

Those are my thoughts exactly. Midvale is awesome without parked cars, but when
they're
there (especially when big trucks are parked) it's sometimes unsafe to stay in
the "bike lane".
The same is true for the Dayton St bike lane, but luckily traffic is slow in
that area.

Yes, I noticed that this morning. And I have to say, I'm not thrilled about
it.

That lane, with no cars parked in it, must be the widest bike lane in the
city.

But that lane also servers as a parking lane. And when cars are parked
there, it is not
all safe. You risk either getting doored on the right, or getting buzzed on
the left by
motorists who don't know how to say in their lanes.

Does AASHTO have standards for bike lanes that double as parking lanes ? It
seems
    kludgy.

Generally, there aren't too many parts of Midvale where people use the
street parking.
But where they do, I usually use the next lane. Now I expect to get yelled
for not using
    the 'bike lane'.

Today, the city is erecting signs for the bike lane on S. Midvale Blvd.
The construction work was completed last summer and the signs are posted
