Mark your calendars: Stoneleigh of The Automatic Earth will be speaking in
Madison sometime around September 22-25 (exact date to be determined.) If
you are interested in sustainability, Transition, relocalization,
permaculture, the end of Growth Capitalism, etc. this is a Can't-Miss.
For those of you not familiar with Stoneleigh, she is a Deep Thinker who,
having spent many years pondering the biophysical limitations on human
consumption, shifted her focus to economic limitations back in ~2005 (i.e.
when the boom was really getting started). As many have since discovered,
one cannot make sense of our ecological predicament outside the context of
our economic system.
Stoneleigh called the financial meltdown long before it happened. She
predicted that there would be a rally after the meltdown, but that it would
falter, and then we would enter something worse than the Great Depression.
She predicted deflation caused by massive destruction of credit. She has
connected more dots than I could possibly BEGIN to summarize here. There
are many of us in the Madison area who consider her work to be seminal.
