I have to think they put cops on bikes just so they can get into tighter places
than a squad car faster than a cop on foot.  If you've ever watched "COPS" they
had some great episodes following a bike cop around Las Vegas.

But that's all just an excuse for me to share my favorite bike cop anecdote.  I
was parked near the Edgewater at the top of the hill going towards the Capital,
and I saw there was a skateboarder timing the stoplight at Gorham St. so he
could blast through the intersection full speed.  The light changes, he starts
flying down the hill, and I hear "HEY!  HOLD IT!" and there is a bike cop
chasing the skateboarder down the hill at full speed.  The skater looks back,
drags a foot to do a 90-degree turn into an narrow alley, jumps off the board
and kicks it ups to himself, and runs down the alley without ever breaking
stride.  The cop and I were left to stand there with our mouths hanging open.
