Mary means west of University Bay Dr, which is what Farley becomes when it
crosses University Ave.

Have had a conversation with the owner of that lot earlier this summer when
I was taking pics of people trying to negotiate the western end of the
Campus Dr Path. She wanted to know why I was taking pictures, and I told her
I was documenting the traffic concerns, especially for bicyclists.

She started telling me how dangerous is was for bicyclists to be cutting
through her lot. Instead of arguing with her, I just nodded and said, "Oh,
it's terrible the way the Village of Shorewood Hills hasn't made a safe
transition for bicyclists." She kept telling me that a bicyclist was going
to get hit by a car backing out, and I said, "Yes, the Village of Shorewood
Hills really needs to do something to provide a safe continuous route west.
You are so right, they have completely shirked their responsibility to
bicyclists."

I think she got tired of me not saying that the bicyclists were being
irresponsible, but being so pleasant in acknowledging her concerns. I told
her that's why I was documenting the problem.

So yes, it is private property, and she has the right to restrict any sort
of vehicles from entering that she wants: red cars, pick-ups, mopeds, Saabs,
or bicycles. It isn't a through street.

The real problem is that bicyclists chose to cut through her parking lot
instead of making a right turn, and then a left to ride down Marshall Court.
I can't say I blame them, although I can't really see that trying to cross
the tangle of traffic that forms between the path and the parking lot is all
that much easier or safer.

I have urged Bikies in the past to contact the Village of Shorewood Hills
and demand that they figure something out to make that west-bound trip safer
and more logical. I have talked to them until I'm blue in the face (as a
bicyclists, as the alder for the adjoining city neighborhood, as a member of
a committee that deals with western campus area traffic issues, as a
knowledgeable professional, etc.) and there's always something they want to
do before attacking this problem: finish the plan for the area, finish the
medical building at Marshall Court and University Bay Dr, wait for
University Ave to be finished, finish rebuilding Marshall Court, wait until
University Bay Dr is rebuilt, etc.

If everyone on this list that has complained about this issue actually wrote
to the Village Board, Village President, Director of Public Works, or the
Traffic Committee - especially is some of those people lived, worked, or
shopped in Shorewood Hills - we'd have a revolution on our hands.

Good luck.
