The Cannonball Trail is an extension of the Military Ridge Trail in the same Chicago & Northwestern Rail Right of Way. The trail could be ultimately extended to the Wingra Path at Fisher Street but getting the trail to Fish Hatchery Road will accomplish most of the goals. The landing point is within the Town of Madison and some upgrades to the sidewalk on the east side of Fish Hatchery as well as the bike lanes should be considered when the trail is placed in service. But, that is pretty common and not difficult to accomplish.
I am particularly pleased that the Arbor Hills Neighborhood will finally have ped/bike connections to the rest of the City. This neighborhood has been effectively cut off by the Beltline since it was developed and the frontage road is not conducive to getting people on bikes although it is used. Finally, I think that the cooperation between Madison and Fitchburg was essential in getting this project funded. My congratulations to the Fitchburg elected officials and staff. Also, Alder Tim Bruer, whom I have never seen on a bike, closely followed the project from the inception and made sure that it was funded. Larry D. But still quite a coup. The big dollars are: *$2.5 million for Cannonball Trail, including bridge over the Beltline. I believe, from having seen maps that I don't now have with me, that the Cannoball projects will get from the Southwest Trail to somewhere near Badger Road, and that the city has plans for paving the remaining section going into town. *$3 million for the Lower Yahara Path between Capital City Trail and McFarland.
