The sidepath is OK, but only for the part of the road that goes along the
Arboretum.  If you're heading south, it ends at Carver St. and turns into a
not-very-bikeable sidewalk.

The best option at that point is to cross Fish Hatchery Road and continue on
the on-street bike lane.  But there is no signal at Carver St -- just some
yellow flashers -- so it can be hard to get across the street at busy times.

Perhaps the Cannonball project will address this, but it's a real problem now.

improvements        for        bicycling access?

Some background may be helpful.

Fish Hatchery Road is a county trunk highway to Wingra Creek.  The road bed is
maintained by the county, which may limit the amount of street sweeping
resources.

The road is constructed across wetlands and has experience differential
settlement despite the inclusion of a permeable membrane beneath the bed.
Hopefully it has stabilized over the last three decades that the current road
has been in service but widening the roadway may exacerbate the problem.

There is a “sidepath”/sidewalk along the east side of the road.  With the
completion of the Cannon Ball bike path along the rail corridor, I suspect that
a number of users may opt for the sidepath vs. the street.
