OK there are subway riders in Oslo who are cheating the system.

Here in the USA we don't even call it cheating when people drive
high-mileage vehicles.and thus don't pay their fair share of fuel taxes for
the highways, roads, and streets they use. So next time you drive your
Prius over a road or bridge which is being repaired, thank an Escalade or
Hummer driver. (WHAT!?!? Did Hans just say that?)

More seriously, freight trucking - which causes most of the damage to
highways - pays maybe 1/3 of the repair costs.

But the worst thing of all is that no habitual motorist pays for making our
communities unsafe, impractical, and unpleasant for non-motorists to live in
our midst. Can people who cannot drive manage to live at 5134 Reynolds
Avenue, Waunakee, WI? Or the Ravenoaks exurban subdivision west of Oregon?
Not if they have any choice!

Why are we so loath to admit that automobile-centric lifestyles are
inherently violent and discriminatory - most of all because they undermine,
destroy, and prevent the formation of human-scale ecosystems? Does our
commitment to not feeling guilty trump our commitment to grappling with
reality?
