=v= It is a weird artifact of our fuel tax that it's based on
volume (per gallon), rather than cost, so when people conserve
fuel, the infrastructure loses funding. Since public transit
is the lowest priority, it suffers the most. It's idiotic!
=v= Of course, the "fair share" argument needs to take in the
cost of impact, which it usually doesn't. Most people aren't
aware that cars run at such a staggering deficit, nor how much
of it is propped up by subsidy that has nothing to do with fuel
taxes, vehicle fees, tolls, etc. Anyone using *any* alternative
is paying more than their fair share, and since bicyclists cost
the least, we're subsidizing them more than anything else.
