When I was a kid, there was an old man in our neighborhood who must have been a track racer in his youth. He still rode a bike, and his bike had a fixed chainwheel (first I'd ever seen) and no brakes (he wore a leather glove on his left hand when he rode; if he needed more stopping power than his legs could provide, he reached down and grabbed the front wheel). And the wheels had wooden rims; he used to sit on a bench, sanding the rims, while he talked to the neighborhood kids. But I thought is bike (like Mr. Malcom himself) was something of an antique. The neighborhood kids mostly had English 3-speeds (which were pretty advanced back then) and his grandson had the first derailleur bike I'd ever seen. And all of us had steel rims, of course. Legislating from the bench is bad enough, now the cops are writing their own laws? But I can't defend Ms. L, because my first day on a ten-speed bike (pig iron frame and hand-carved maple wood rims, as I recall, very high tech for the era) I bought a kickstand for it and was carrying it home the same way Ms. L has her bag. Going up a hill I stood up and pumped and as the bike swung back and forth, the kickstand swung into my front wheel, hit the fork, locked the front wheel, and I went AoHB, landing on my right elbow. It unbent in a few days.
