I don't really think about it one way or the other. To be honest, I
never even realized that there was a discount offered for Coop shopping
for bikers. I have the bike benefits sticker and more than 50% of the
time I patronize businesses and forget to ask about it... but I still
patronize the businesses (which I think is the whole idea) because they
are bike friendly. The coop has nice bike parking facilities, extra room
for trailers, and a generally good vibe. Thats a draw to me.
If I was to think about it in the BIG PICTURE... I am more inclined to
think of myself on my bike as just another vehicle on the road (a good
way to ride safely too). As as such, I don't want to be treated any
differently (I want to "take the lane" when I need it cause I am legally
entitled to it if I need to for safety reasons). So getting to a
business on a bike is just my chosen method of getting there. I don't
really need a bonus for making that choice. If I get one, great, if not,
no problem. If a business changes some 'special' treatment of a group
(in this case bikers) that's their choice. I don't think I'd change my
transportation or business choices because of it.
Flip the coin and imagine a place like Stockholm where 40% of trips are
made by bike. I doubt that businesses need to give a perk to bikers
there. That's the way it should be here - sustainable transport that
is... self-sustaining!

Subject: [Bikies] Folks who ride their bike to the Willy St. Coop
should get a discount no matter what day it is

So I thought I'd include everyone on this [bikies] list about my most recent
complaint.
This is from my fb
OK, I have a gripe. The other weekend I made a point to go to Willy
Street Coop on my bike. I vowed to myself that I would not try to drive
to the coop while Willy St was being reconstructed. I have enjoyed
getting this bicycle discount when I rode my bike last Fall. I even
have the bicyclebenefits.org sticker. And I remember the rule was if
you rode your bike on a weekend you get the discount, but not on
weekdays. Well apparently the Coop recently switched it so you only get
a discount on weekdays and not weekends. Stupid dumb rule. Willy St
should be giving a discount to anyone and everyone who don't drive
during all this construction. Anyone else feel this way?
Thanks for listening,
Paddy Rourke
