I'll second that.  Riding between Town of Madison and Downtown Madison daily,
there are many places I feel like I need to take up a traffic lane because of
road condition in the gutter and right-side pavement.  Do I risk getting stuck
in a pothole or cracking joint or get run over in the traffic lane?

I <3 this! Can they just repave the 3' closest to the curbs? I guess I *do*

Lest we forget...The City of Madison increased its street maintenance

standards in the 1970s because the advent of the higher pressure, narrow

bike tires resulted in safety concerns.  Pavement distress generally begins

in the area closest to the curbs, where bikes travel.  In other words,

pavements have to maintained at a higher standard in order to support all

modes of transport._________________________________________
