It is easy, I think, to fall into the trap of thinking that anti-bike folks are
"conservatives" when the reality is rather different. Chuck Schumer's and the
disgraced Anthony Wiener are both anti-bike path and comfortable center-left
politicians. I would also argue, based on bumper stickers, that as many
center-leftists as center rightists drive like cycling is a crime. In short,
abusing cyclists is a bipartisan enterprise while support for bikes is equally
bipartisan. On the website Commute by bike, for example, they had a guest post
from a stout conservative who was a strong advocate for cycling as transport.
I think that the dividing line isn't left versus right but rather reasonable
versus unreasonable.
