You think you're making folks nervous? I encounter this all the time in
my wife's diesel-belching three-ton truck, on the very same "bike
boulevard", one that I use by bicycle more often than by car/truck. I
just keep as much distance as I can, going even slower than the
bicyclist if I have to. I figure doing so, creating an "expanding"
space, might be assuring. As a bicycle user, this may be the jaundice of
experience talking, but I feel MUCH less nervous with a motor vehicle
right behind me than coming up beside. The "up beside" approach always
implies "what're they gonna do next?" Hard to say what goes through the
mind of a less-experienced bicyclist, esp. without a mirror.
Of course, having your signal on well in advance helps. It might even
encourage some bicyclists to move LEFT, which is a safer place to be
when someone behind them is turning right.
In your particular case, I'd just jump over a block and drive down the
Avenue.
At the risk of topic creep, my bigger concern with the E. Mifflin "bike
boulevard" is the increasing (at least it seems) presence of ninjas.

yeah, I know, the real answer is park the car and ride a bike myself . .
. but . . .
Frequently I need to make a right turn, and there is a bike in front of
me going slowly (up the Mifflin hill) or just slow, and I don't want to
go around the bike and then turn in front of them . . . and if I go
slowly behind them that seems to make them nervous . . . is there
something I should do to let them know its ok to just be slow and I"m
patient? It certainly isn't right to go around them and then turn,
crossing their path . . .
Suggestions? Maybe there aren't any and I should just do what I do, its
just happened a few times in the last few days and feels awkward.
