Interesting read from an economics point of view: http://economicsintelligence.com/2011/03/11/the-economics-of-bike-lanes-%E2%80%93-how-can-john-cassidy-get-it-so-wrong/
In this case, adding bike lanes comes at the expense of on-street parking. The author seems to be making the case that bike lanes (like all traffic lanes) are a public good. But parking is really a private good.
