Matt,

Let's not forget the free ride that motorized vehicles have enjoyed for the past 30 years:

1. Gasoline taxes cover less than half the cost of roads. Sales, property and income tax payers - i.e. the rest of us, pay for the balance.

2. We've spent over 5 trillion dollars in the past two decades with wars and military support in in the Middle East, primarily designed to assure uninterrupted supplies of petroleum whose principle use is to power motorized vehicles. What taxes support this? This amounts to a $2-3 dollar per gallon subsidy.

The reduced wear and tear on roadways from bicycle and other non-motorized transportation pay for themselves.

Thanks,

Richard
