John Francis, who has been mentioned before on this listserv, is being
interviewed on WORT right now. He spent 22 years using walking as his main form
of transportation (completely avoiding motorized vehicles) and 17 years of that
not talking because he wanted to learn how to listen. He's a visiting professor
at the Nelson Institute.
