Bikies, I will second what Larry said. I was one of the co-chairs of the citizen design committee for the SW Path. We heard loud and clear from the neighbors between the Beltline and Breeze Terrace that they did not want lighting but the police and community groups did want lighting south of the Beltline. So the compromise that was reached was to install lighting south of the Beltline and put in the conduit for lighting north of the Beltline. Putting in the conduit with construction of the path was a cost saving measure for the time if and when neighbors requested lighting.
For me personally, the SW Path at night isn't a problem but I have a good headlight system. I can understand that with a standard headlight, the SW path could be pretty dark. One thing to consider with lighting is whether it will provide a continuous zone of light along the path or whether you will be biking from one lit spot to the next while being blinded by the lights in the dark spots in between. If the latter, I would be reluctant to add lighting. That said, lighting done right could be an asset for the path and the neighbors, and I think neighbors may be coming around to the idea of some lighting on the path. I have also cced Denise Lamb on this email as she is the President of the Midvale Heights Community Association of which I am a member. Mark -- Mark N.
