________________________________ My name is Alicia Marvin, and my parents are Kevin and Sue Marvin. We lived in Madison until 1996, when we moved for my dad's job. I am about to undertake a major adventure for a very good cause and I need your help. This spring and summer I will be biking 3,921 miles from Florida to California with a program through Habitat for Humanity called Bike and Build. This program raises money for and awareness of affordable housing issues. We will also be taking 16 days throughout the trip to volunteer with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together, focusing 9 of those days on the Gulf Coast as they continue their post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. We will do all of this in 68 days. In order to participate, I need to raise $4,500 to support these incredible organizations working to alleviate poverty housing all over the country. I hope that you are able to support me in this venture. No amount is too small--or too big! You can make a tax-deductible contribution on Bike and Build's website at www.bikeandbuild.org/donate(preferred) and use the drop down window to select my name. The proceeds are distributed to affordable housing organizations all over the country through Bike and Build's competitive grant application process. If you are interested in sponsoring a portion of my trip, whether it's a day or even a state (who wants Texas?? *wink*), I will send you a postcard from the arrival city for that day (though if anyone takes on Texas, you definitely get a souvenir). You can also follow me throughout my journey at www.bikeandbuild.org/rider/5699. My interest in affordable housing issues began while I was a student at BHS, when I took part in the Principals of Engineering, Architecture, and Construction program at BTC. I then went on to graduate from UMass Amherst with a BFA in Architecture and a BS in Environmental Design, while spending my summers volunteering with the Green Mountain chapter of Habitat for Humanity. During college I spent a semester in both India and Australia, where I studied sustainability and permaculture. After college I spent a year as an AmeriCorps volunteer in southern Delaware, where I worked with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity and got an intimate look at the success of Habitat's work. I am very committed to the cause of developing low income housing. I sincerely appreciate anything you can do to support me in my adventure while also helping a great cause.
