I just traversed the Carroll-MLK block of Doty this evening. ICK! Any arrangement that puts the bike lake in the curb/gutter is bad juju. Already, I saw a car turning right from Doty to MLK, turning from the rush-hour "car" lane (left of the bike lane). Any unsuspecting, inexperienced bicyclist would interpret the markings as meaning s/he should use that curb-hugging lane at all times, and would have been right hooked by that car driver turning right. The way it was, the right lane was a shared car/bike traffic lane during rush hour, and worked fine for that purpose.

We could just about have a lottery for the date in which the first right-hook crash occurs during rush hour (or not) at Doty & MLK.

Although there is an error in the article, it's nice to see that the new
bike lane on Doty St is getting a bit of press:

I wrote the following to Bill Novak, who wrote the article. He said he'd
add my comments. I'd rather that he simply correct the article...

The article states, "During rush hour from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday
to Friday, bicyclists will be required to use the bike lane next to the
right side curb, so three traffic lanes can be used on the one-way street."

Bicyclists are not required to use a bike lane, and may ride on either
the left or the right of a one-way street. Bicyclists should be in the
left lane if they will be turning left. They should also not stay to the
far right or ride in the right-hand bike lane if they are passing
another vehicle, such as someone about to turn right.
