This article landed in the Vancouver Sun last week:
http://www.vancouversun.com/health/Traffic+circles+sharrows+create+dangers+cyclists/6853033/story.html The most surprising thing in the article was the claim that sharrows have a negative impact on cyclist safety. Vancouver has been laying down sharrows with great abandon. The article doesn't help finding the referenced study that purports to show this research result, but I later found a reference on the Seattle Bike Blog at http://seattlebikeblog.com/2012/06/28/canadian-study-on-residential-streets-traffic-diversion-is-key-for-safe-cycling/ to a presentation by the lead researcher, UBC's Kay Teschke, that summarized the work: http://cyclingincities-spph.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2012/06/TeschkeVeloCity2012.pdf which has a whole whack of authors, some at (the vastly inferior) University of Toronto. Interesting reading. -- Scott M. Rose West Point Grey, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
