Quick to say first that the Dawley Bike Hub at Dunn's Marsh easily passed in
the County Board last night, so that project will be going forward over the
next year or so.

As part of the preparation for last night, I met with the Fitchburg Traffic
Engineer who explained that the reason for calling both the Southwest Path
and the Cannonball Path using the word Path rather than Trail is to
differentiate between the state trail system (most or much of which requires
a permit) and the locally maintained paths. So, there is a legal and logical
reason for the word path, although understandably, it may feel like more
then just a 'path' to serious bikers.

Although I disagree with the opinion expressed here, I will give KMSH credit
for using a straightforward and meaningful subject line rather than the
nonsensical "Fact-Lite Screed" (huh???) subject line that has been
perpetuated even though the message content throughout this lengthy thread
has been about lighting and bicycle safety.

That said, I think that perhaps part of the problem is one of nomenclature
for this transportation facility. Calling it a "path" evokes a quaint and
bucolic imagery that simply isn't applicable to the situation It's not a
"path," it's a highway for bicycles. Call it the "Bikie Beltway" or
something similar and people will understand the necessity of
appropriately-designed lighting that will enhance traffic safety without
unnecessarily directing light upward and adding to nighttime light
pollution.
