Some peculiarities I note regarding cyclists approach to helmet use (or non-use) based on observations and reading cyclists 'two cents'

I often see a family of 4 happily cycling along the street or path - the 2 kids with their helmets on and their parents WITHOUT any helmet on. So who takes care of the kids in the event of a traumatic brain injury to the adult, and what example are they providing?

I often see cyclists riding at a pretty good clip on a path or street with their helmet neatly strapped to their handlebars. What's the plan? To quickly slip it on as their cranium is heading for the pavement?

I teach driver education. I remind the students that they may become safe drivers, but they cannot control what the other 'clowns' on the road will do, so defensive and safe driving habits are essential. One street is safer than another? Really? Every street has the potential to contain a bad crack that will snag a wheel and throw you down or a 'clown' driving erratically that will take you out.

If a cyclists does not want to wear a helmet, and the law doesn't enforce it, than they have the option to go helmet-less and I have no problem with that. But please don't rationalize that one street is less dangerous, one situation is safer than another, one season is safer then the next or you are a safe biker and it will never happen to you.

My two cents, sometimes I wear a helmet, sometimes I don't. In winter I always
do, but in warm weather, I may not depending on where I am riding. When I rode
a motorcycle, same thing.

I always make my son wear one, and if with him I always do also. But I went
over the bars into Sherman Ave when I wasn't wearing one, without damage as I
tucked and rolled, but on Willy St, I wouldn't think of riding without one.

It should be a personal choice for adults, and not subject to critisism. I am
more adament regarding use of headlights, lets focus on that before insisting
on helmets.
