I was cruising down the bike lane on Gorham this am as I do every day on my
way to work. Just after I crossed State St a large pickup truck passes me
and is encroaching on the bike lane. This is a regular occurrence and gets
worse when Gorham turns right and becomes University. At this spot it is
highly unlikely that the vehicle will not cross over the line into the bike
lane. So at this spot the large truck is beside me and goes a full foot
into the bike lane. I held my ground and gave the vehicle a couple warning
knocks on the side of the truck, just 3 or 4 slaps with my hand to let them
know I was there and it was a bike lane and that they were encroaching. So
two blocks later I am stopped at University and Park and said pickup truck
pulls along side me and asks if I hit his truck. I told him I did because
he was in the bike lane and I was letting him know that I was there and not
to drive in the bike lane. Without going into to much detail the driver
did not like this and threatened violence even saying he would get out of
his truck and beat me up. I kept saying that he was in the bike lane and
that all I was doing is letting him know that he was taking my lane. He
also said something about how much his truck cost and that if I hit it
again he would charge me or something and I responded that my life is worth
more and told him that his truck could kill me and this is why I let him
know he was in the bike lane. So I guess my question is how can we ever
educate people like this? Obviously he does not care and even said I
should have avoided him. Next time I am driving in a car I should just
swerve over into the other lane and blame the car occupying it that they
should have moved to avoid colliding.
