It was mildly enlightening to tedium to read the MUP etiquette argument about 
going to the right or left around moving obstacles, but the truth is you can't 
go through an obstacle without a serious crash. I think the analogy can apply 
here. If one has a goal to safeguard those who are not enclosed in a steel 
vehicle then one shouldn't have their knickers tied up in knots over what is 
said on talk radio. You HAVE to go for the gusto and promote what is the 
correct 
thing to do which is to push for a vulnerable roadway users law that would give 
teeth to prosecutors and civil litigants. That law not only protects 
progressive 
and conservative cyclists but also conservative and liberal horseback riders, 
conservative and liberal farmers, conservative and liberal utility workers, 
conservative and liberal pedestrians, conservative and liberal highway crews, 
and school children of conservative and liberal families. If drunkards, 
texters, 
sleepy heads, and other distracted deviant drivers can't see what's ahead of 
them they certainly can't distinguish which political persuasion their victims 
are. And to water down legislation because of what fear mongers say on radio, 
to 
me is not moving forward but cowtowing to anonymous cowards who don't know what 
and whose personal freedom is really at risk.

The bicycle advocacy groups in Texas also partnered with other groups and
believed in their bill until Rick Perry vetoed it last year:

and responsibility on the operator of a motor vehicle when encountering one
of these vulnerable road users," Perry said.

I hope you at least have fun wasting BFW members money on this issue this
year.

         That's not my assessment, Matt. Much of the early resistance to
this legislation actually came from liberals, who seem adverse to increasing
penalties from a philosophical legal perspective. That said, the legislation
is not just a ped-bike bill; it intentionally brings together an array of
vulnerable allies on this subject, ranging from we peds/bikers, to
motorcyclists, first responders, good Samaritans and, yes, even operators of
farm machinery. BFW will be leading a powerful coalition on this
legislation. This will become law.
