I believe self-driving cars, if allowed to truly be self driving and not require an active operator, would eliminate personal automobile ownership and dramatically change mode share. Once you no longer own an automobile, you can realize savings much more easily during price spikes by using alternatives. This same technology could be applied to public transit and shipping, thus reducing the costs of transport and eliminating the need to widen highways.
