I'm a big fan of the Marathon Winters (240 count for 700x35) and I've never
had any issue with too many studs or dangerous cornering on pavement. I've
ridden them quite a bit on dry pavement, glare ice and rutted ice and they
really perform great in all conditions. The benefit to the higher stud
count is that they really do hold on ice better when cornering and
especially on rutted ice (due to having a second row of studs on the
sides). They also handle snow (less than 3" or so) pretty well for a skinny
tire. I've found them to be a great all-around winter tire. Sure they
crackle a little on pavement, but to me it's just one of the sounds of
winter.
