Scott:
These are tired old arguments, that cyclists don't pay their share. It's BS. I guess if you live in a city and walk or bike everywhere, maybe you don't. But the overwhelming majority of us drive motor vehicles -- to work, to the grocery and drugstores, on business, to bike club events, to bike tour destinations, and we pay lots of fuel taxes, state and federal. And, in return, we expect our roads to safely accommodate all forms of transportation, including our bicycles. Think Transportation Builders Association. Why did it change from road builders? Think about that for a moment. I'm not going to go into all of the things that were happening at the time. But that was a paradigm shift from the old days. It's no longer just about roads, it's about transportation. Why that happened was not because people have "sources" like blogs but because of economic realities and the hard work of the bicycle advocates (BFW) who saw the change coming and acted upon it. It actually dates back to a column I wrote for Silent Sports, urging an end to the classic bikes vs roads battles, encouraging a new era of cooperation, and an e-mail I got back out of the clear blue saying simply, "road builders bicycle, too." That was the bridge. That's what we acted on. We crossed that bridge. That's how good things happen, not by continuing to fight wars long lost in the past. Sure the Seattle Dem is conflicted. I'm not even going to attempt to get into all the issues surrounding that proposal.

WA is gearing up to consider a roads-roads-roads transportation bill and a Seattle dem, chair of the transportation committee has proposed a $25 tax on new bicycles costing >$500 as part of it. But she says she doesn't support it herself. I'm not clairvoyant, but I do have stupid-good sources- I read about it here:
