Just an FYI. From the City of Madison website: Closure - Walnut Street, from Old University Avenue to Campus Drive, starting 04/15/13
The City and its contractors are planning to begin construction on Walnut Street on Monday, April 15th. The project will consist of the installation of a major storm sewer tunnel, replacement of concrete curb and gutter, drive aprons and new asphalt pavement. To facilitate the construction, Walnut Street will be closed between Old University Avenue and Campus Drive. The street will be opened up for the Crazylegs Classic event on Saturday, April 27th, and then will be closed again. The project is expected to last until end of August. Access to all businesses will be maintained. Sidewalk on at least one side of the street will be open at all times. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes to avoid delay during this project. http://www.cityofmadison.com/news/view.cfm?news_id=3803 Note that, although it is not stated in the press release, bicyclists will also be able to use Walnut St. Various people, not just me - i.e. not just the crazy bike lady who always brings these things up - have pointed out to the City and contractors that the sidewalk on Walnut under Campus Dr is very narrow and will not be wide enough to handle both 2-way pedestrian traffic and 2-way bike traffic. Hell, it's not really wide enough to handle two of anything at the same time, even if they were going the same way. They have assured me that there will be some area besides the sidewalk available.
