Correction: It’s not Purdue St that goes from one-way for Motor Vehicles to two-way for certain parts of the year, it’s the intersecting streets - Columbia and Swarthmore that switch (during swim season, I think). chuck
From: STRAWSER, Charles Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 8:54 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [Bikies] Bike Cop in Shorewood Hills I agree that the vast majority of traffic on the path that goes south of Shorewood’s pool will be traveling east or west through the village via Purdue St. But that path is routed perpendicular to Purdue so that it forms a more or less square intersection with Purdue St and Swarthmore Ct (the street that continues northward from Purdue), and hence requires traffic controls at the intersection of Purdue/Swarthmore/bike path. Purdue St (and it’s intersections with Columbia Rd and Swarthmore Ct) are particularly problematic from a design and traffic control standpoint because the Village chooses to make Purdue St one way east bound for motor vehicles (with a contraflow westbound bike lane) for MOST of the year. But the Village has historically made Purdue two-way for motor vehicles for some part of the year. When I met with them several years ago to discuss how they could improve the old 3’ wide “bike lane” that was supposedly two-way on the south side of Purdue, I tried to talk them into just making Purdue permanently two-way, or one-way for MVs with a contraflow bike lane, but they wanted to continue doing what they’d always done. I don’t know if they still do that (they implement it by removing the One-Way/DoNotEnter/ExceptBikes signs that face West bound traffic on Purdue at Swarthmore, and other signs as appropriate). Google maps is not updated enough to show the new path section south of the pool, but the intersection of Purdue and Swarthmore is here: http://goo.gl/maps/vdsAQ Obviously, it would be better for path users traveling through the village to be able to get from the path that terminates at the west end of Purdue to the path that connects Purdue at Swarthmore to Marshall Ct, but my understanding from the contract engineer for the Village of Shorewood Hills is that there is not enough Right of Way between Purdue St and the RR tracks to do that, at least not without the consent of the RR (which is historically very difficult to get, see, e.g. how long it took to build any path adjacent to active rail lines in Madison in the last two decades). It may be that the Village has long term plans to connect those two sections of path (or at least to stop flipping back and forth between different conditions on Purdue). I hope so. But they’ve made some very significant improvements in the last few years that benefit people passing through their village arguably as much or more as their own residents. Let’s remember to thank them for the real improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians that they’ve accomplished as we ask for more. I agree with the stop sign comment and also think they could have angled the path so it was not perpendicular to road as I think the majority of people will be going from the path left onto Purdue. 3. Bike Cop in Shorewood Hills (Josh Mayer) ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Tue, 27 May 2014 07:02:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Josh Mayer <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> To: "[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>" <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: [Bikies] Bike Cop in Shorewood Hills Message-ID: <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" FWIW & FYI...there was a bicycle cop this morning on Rose Place between the UW Credit Union and Copps.? He was monitoring the intersection of Rose Pl & Locust Dr, at which, to be fair, the majority of cyclists do not stop.? On the other hand, had I not stopped I don't think he could have chased me down.? In other years, I have seen motorcycle cops watching from further east on Locust. On another Shorewood Hills note, there is a short new path segment between Purdue St and Marshall Ct.? Unfortunately, they saw fit to introduce another stop sign there at Purdue and the path itself is like riding on a washboard.
