Greetings- I talked to the Jackson St Plaza curators, Erin McWalter and Koffi Dogbevi of the Madison Traffic Garden, and we decided to end the pilot on Friday Sept 5 and reopen Jackson St. We don't want to overstay our welcome and the week of Labor Day seemed like a good transition. The Thursday Food Cart nights have been a great success and there will be two more so please stop by Aug 28 and Sept 4. Thursday nights showed us the power of place-making: we created a place for hundreds of people to gather and enjoy food with friends and family where they never would have spent time before. The food carts will likely head over to Circle Park for the rest of the season and the Chocolate Shoppe will stay open until Oct 5. I want to thank Madison Traffic Garden for offering to organize the space. The first thing they did was call Jackson St a Plaza and then they decorated it with DIY furniture, a chalkboard and chalk, yarn, and free food. They created a Facebook page to share pictures and events, and encouraged people to provide programming. And people responded! Angela Richardson spent a day collecting affixing bottle caps to the art installation she created for the Atwood Fest, guerrilla yoga happened, Jessica Ray coordinated volunteers for the weekly Atwood Lending Library repair cafe, Dr Carrie of the Full Circle Holistic Veterinary and Lauren of Underground Pet Rescue partnered to create pet play time, Raizes do Brasil performed capoeira and the concrete barriers were yarnbombed by the Bodgery. People started using the space. I also want to thank Christine Ameigh of Slide Food Cart, Dave Deadman of Chocolate Shoppe and the other food cart vendors, you created the buzz with good food. You packed the hill with families who enjoyed sharing a meal, ice cream and the space together. David Dryer in Traffic Engineering and Mayor Soglin and his staff have been extremely helpful as I navigated the process to close a city street for an extended period of time. Finally I want to thank nearby residents whose daily rounds were changed by this experiment. Thank you for trying out/putting up with the experiment. What happens in the future at Jackson St is to be determined. Whether we repeat this experiment next summer, decide to close the street permanently, or do something else, it will be based on community input and discussion. Thanks to everyone who emailed me or city staff with your comments and concerns. What we learned about placemaking will be useful as we prepare for the reconstruction of the Schenks Corners intersection. Can you imagine a plaza there? Where did you get the date of September 4? Thanks. Please spread the word! Due to the reopening of Jackson on September 4, some rearranging of future Repair Cafes is in order. we think we are going to try and shoot for having them once per month to allow for more planning time. Stay tuned for when and where the next Repair Cafe will be.
