To be clear, there are two separate issues.

The question about which side the spur back to McKee Rd on the south side of
the bridge should be involved the two businesses. General Beverage wants to
build a roadway between the bridge and their building, including parking
cars up against the west side of the bridge, so they started a very
contentious battle which is having extremely negative impact on the other
business.

The continuation of the path to the south is purely General Beverage's
desire to have more parking available and doesn't involve the other
business. So from the top of the bridge, bikers will be looking down at
vehicles parked where the straight-line path should be, and the path will
have to go over and around wetlands to get around them. Wetland permits have
been a big holdup there.

I don't know how expensive it will be to make all those changes to cater to
General Beverage, but I'm not happy for the taxpayers of Fitchburg.

Subject: [Bikies] Saga of the Highway PD bike bridge

Work on the new Military Ridge Trail/Cannonball Bike Path bridge
over Highway PD (McKee Road) in Fitchburg was held up due to a dispute
between adjacent landowners over location of the south approach. Based on a
decision by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Fitchburg
Planning Commission recently approved a conditional use permit for the
project, but that generated a threat of an appeal that would have further
delayed the project. That threat has now vanished. Barring another
unexpected development, Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff says the city now hopes
the south end of the path can be completed by September 22 and the north end
by October 20. Looks like we'll get to ride it this year after all.
